Margaret Elaine Johnson Crawley, 61, of West Point, GA, passed away Wednesday at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She was born to the late Columbus and Essie Mae Johnson on March 26, 1952.
Elaine accepted Christ into her life at an early age. She was an avid member of New Harmony C.M.E Church where she faithfully served on many boards and auxiliaries including serving as church secretary, President of the Stewardess Board, member of the Trustees Board, and sang in the choir for many years where her daughter was the church pianist. Leadership was a natural attribute that she possessed.
Elaine was educated in Troup County, GA. She graduated with honors from Ethel W. Kight High School in 1970. She was also crowned Miss Kight High for homecoming in 1969-70. In 1970, she entered Morris Brown College where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. While there, she became a member of the Gamma Zeta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. After graduating from Morris Brown College, she later went on to complete required courses of study at the Medical College of Georgia where she became a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, even though so many thought she was a nurse.
On December 21, 1975, Elaine married Ronald Lee Crawley, of Lanett, AL, and this union was blessed with two children. Elaine was employed by West Georgia Medical Center as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist where she was still employed for over 30 years until her untimely departure. Through the years, Elaine was also employed by George H. Lanier Hospital and Clark-Holder Clinic and served as a professor at West Georgia Technical College, where she taught Phlebotomy.
Not only was she known as a charter member of the LaGrange Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she also served as president during the 1993-95 term. In addition to these and many other accomplishments, Elaine also served as recording secretary on the board of trustees with Community Action for Improvement in LaGrange, GA.
Survivors include her daughter, Christy (Roderick) Robinson of Valley, AL, her son, Ronald “Todd”Crawley of Austell, GA, her precious granddaughter, Alaina Robinson of Valley, AL; one sister, Jewell Martin of Hampton, GA, two brothers, Larry Johnson of West Point, GA and Rev. Christopher (Linda) Johnson of Augusta, GA; a god sister, LaShawn (Edward) Gibson of West Point, GA; a brother-in-law, Mayor Oscar (Juliette) Crawley of Lanett, AL, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Booker of Windsor, CT, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Funeral Service will be Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Pastor W. T. Edmondson and Pastor John Pollard officiating. Burial will follow at the New Harmony C. M. E. Church Cemetery.
