The LaGrange Symphony Orchestra opens its 2013-2014 season on Oct. 15 with “Celebrating Life Well Lived,” a tribute to long-time LSO board member Ida Florine Tarver Jones.
Featuring selections known to be favorites of Jones, the concert includes a Duke Ellington medley, selections from Porgy and Bess, and the fourth movement of Dvorak’s “New World Symphony.” The concert also will feature a presentation of spirituals arranged by LaGrange College graduate Alonzo Harris, and performed by John Dreher, Alyese Wilkerson, Linda Jackson and Nathaniel Greene, who is a nephew of Jones.
“She always enjoyed the performances and would often sing along while the orchestra played,” said Traci Jones, Ida Jones’ daughter. “She especially enjoyed the last concert that she attended in November 2012, which honored the Armed Forces. The Air Force song brought back memories of her husband’s years of service.”
A retired educator, Jones was a member of the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors from 1997 until her passing in 2013, serving from 2005 to 2011 as secretary of the board. Throughout her tenure Jones was active in many of the orchestra’s educational initiatives including the annual Children’s Concerts and Young Artists Competition.
“Ida was a constant presence at board meetings and other committee meetings during her many years of service to the Symphony,” said board president Gary Mayer. “Sharing her perspectives on music and education, Ida was an integral part of the leadership team that helped the orchestra to grow and thrive through the years.”
Added LSO Executive Director Dave Marler: “As we begin our 25th anniversary celebration, it is only fitting that we open the season with a concert dedicated to the memory of Ida’s life. I am grateful for her friendship through the years. She will long be remembered for her commitment to the success of our organization and her service to many other causes across our community.”
