Football season. Children back in school. That crispness in the morning.
It can only mean that Hogansville’s annual Hummingbird Festival is around the corner.
A number of festival-related events fill the calendar for October.
The festival poker tournament is at noon Saturday at Hawg Heaven barbecue. Those interested may call 706-637-8990 for more information.
The festival itself kicks off with the annual dinner and silent auction at 6 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Victoria Belle Mansion with food by Chef Matt Preble and Professional Touch catering.
The bulk of events are Oct. 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year welcomes back the student art show and competition and other entertainment is scheduled throughout the weekend. More than 100 arts and crafts vendors, an international food court, antiques, craft demonstrations and children’s activities will fill every corner of downtown.
The art show is open at First United Methodist Church in downtown Hogansville on both days of the festival. Organized by Callaway High School art teacher Clint Robinson, it will show works from students at all three high schools, middle schools and several elementary schools. Awards will be given for first, second and third places in high school and middle school categories. A best of show and honorable mention awards will be given for elementary school students. The awards ceremony is at noon Oct. 19.
Entertainment is planned for all three days at the Food Court Stage, 1910 House Stage and at Fire House 11, the former firehouse downtown.
The annual festival golf tournament, postponed because of rain in September, is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 26. Those interested may call 706-637-8887 for information on the tournament.

A free festival guidebook, published annually, is available at most businesses in Hogansville and in LaGrange at the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce. It has information on vendors who will be in Hogansville and a full schedule of all entertainment, as well as a map and other festival highlights.
Proceeds from the festival benefit the Hogansville Charitable Trust, which provides the city matching money for grants to make improvements around Hogansville.
The annual Haunted House in the Royal Theater portion of City Hall also kicks off on festival weekend. Opening night is Oct. 19 with more “hauntings” on Oct. 25, 26 and 31.
The haunted house is open from 7 to 10 p.m. and is not recommended for small children. This year, proceeds from the event will benefit Callaway High School’s cross country team. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
Volunteers and actors are still being sought to put the haunted house together. Find more information at www.hauntedhogansville.com
