LSPA holding auditions for winter play

Staff report

October 28, 2013

Auditions are scheduled next week for roles in “The Foreigner,” the winter play at Lafayette Society for Performing Arts.

The comedy of misconceptions at a fishing lodge in rural Georgia calls for two women — one age 20 to 35, the other 45 or older — and five men — one 15-plus, while the others depend on casting, but all are at least 25.

Auditions are at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 and 11 at the LSPA black box theater at 214 Bull St. in downtown LaGrange with cold readings and possible stage games. Molly Fitzsimmons directs the play for Lafayette Theatre Company.

Run dates are Feb. 6-8 and 14-16.

The play, which won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards, demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters must deal with a stranger who (they think) knows no English.

The scene is a fishing lodge often visited by “Froggy” LeSeuer, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time Froggy has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So Froggy, before departing, tells everyone that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English.

Once alone, the fun begins as Charlie overhears more than he should — many damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. But he does understand, fueling the nonstop hilarity of the play.
