Drivers honored, more needed

November 1, 2013

Randy Dollar, commander of the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, speaks to volunteers gathered Thursday for an annual appreciation lunch. The DAV recruits volunteer drivers and is always in need of more to take veterans to doctor’s appointments in Tuskeegee, Ala., and Atlanta, said Dave Lyons, volunteer coordinator. There are currently about 25 volunteers but they ‘come and go,’ Lyons said. William Petty, chief of volunteer services for the Tuskeegee hospital, was on hand for the lunch Thursday and said that to his facility alone, LaGrange volunteers have put in more than 1,000 hours, transporting more than 300 veterans and logging 12,000 miles. Volunteer drivers must pass a physical. To volunteer, call Lyons at 706-882-7825.
