Atlanta Symphony concertmaster, Youth Chorus highlight ‘American Harmony’

Staff report

November 8, 2013

The LaGrange Symphony Orchestra continues its 2013-2014 concert series with “Celebrating Our American Harmony” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in Callaway Auditorium.

The program features Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster David Coucheron performing Barber’s Violin Concerto. Also included is a choral performance by a chorus of fourth and fifth grade students from local schools.

“The Barber Concerto is one of the greatest American works written for violin,” Coucheron said. “It is a beautiful concerto filled with gorgeous lyrical passages and a very technically challenging last movement. I look forward to performing this piece with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, and being a part of the city’s celebration of the Smithsonian Institute’s New Harmonies Exhibit.”

LSO music director and conductor Patricio Cobos is eagerly anticipating Coucheron’s performance.

“David is an incredible musician with beautiful technique,” he said. “I am delighted that he is joining us for this special performance.”

The Orchestra will also be joined by a chorus comprised of fourth and fifth grade students from around Troup County. Led by Debbie Ogle, the chorus will perform classic selections chosen to reflect the roots of American music.

“It is really wonderful to be working with children again,” Ogle said. “Since leaving Young Singers several years ago when I came to the college, I haven’t had the opportunity to work with that age group, and I had almost forgotten how energetic and enthusiastic they are – full of joy for the task at hand.

“I’m so happy that the symphony reaches out to children in the community both in the public schools and home-schooled in such a meaningful way. What a great experience for these young children to get to sing with our symphony. That is an experience that most people go a lifetime without enjoying. What a gift. I’m just glad to be a part of it all.”

Tickets may be purchased in advance from the symphony office by calling 706-882-0662 prior to the day of the concert. Tickets will also be sold at the Callaway Auditorium box office beginning at 7 p.m., when the door open, the night of the concert. Concertgoers were encouraged to arrive early.

All tickets for students sixth grade and older are $5. Children fifth grade and younger are admitted free with an adult.
