The LaGrange High cheerleading team has made history.
LaGrange finished fourth in the state sectional on Friday to earn a spot in today’s state finals in Columbus.
LaGrange will be one of 16 Class AAAA teams competing for the state championship.
Mike Pauley, the head cheerleading coach, said this is the first time a LaGrange team has reached this point.
“We’re so excited. This is the first time in the history of our program we’ve made it to the (finals),” Pauley said. “This is the first time we’ve been in the top 16.”
LaGrange also made it to the sectional round last year, but it didn’t qualify for the finals.
LaGrange was one of 20 teams competing in its sectional on Friday, and it was fourth behind River Ridge, Columbus and Alexander.
The finals includes the eight region champions in Class AAAA, as well as eight teams from the sectional round.
LaGrange finished fourth in the Region 5-AAAA competition to advance to the state regional.
“We would like to make top-10,” Pauley said. “That’s our goal.”
In Class AAA, Callaway was also in the sectional round, but it was unable to make it through to the state finals.
