The first phase of West Point’s river walk project began at noon Wednesday with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Chattahoochee River Overlook, organized by the LaGrange Troup County Chamber of Commerce.
The overlook, will be located between the City Hall and the Hawkes Library, directly across from the kayak launch. This project marks the first phase of a city park and river walk in downtown West Point.
“For years we’ve had an interesting relationship with the river and we’ve found many different ways to access the river and enjoy it,” said Mayor Drew Ferguson IV. “And it’s a wonderful asset to this community and it’s a great way to invite people into the community”
Ferguson thanked KIA for continuously working with the West Point community.
“They work hard to find opportunities to work within the community to help us promote our goals and having a healthy and safe community to live,” he said. “We’re fortunate to have Kia to continue to help make this community better and better.”
Kia Vice President of Administration and Human Resources, J. Randy Jackson, presented the City with a $40,000 check to go towards the project, on behalf of Kia Motors.
“We hope it will serve and make the outcome of the result fantastic for people to have in the future,” said Jackson. “It’s really nice to see that you’re making a difference in what citizens of this city want to do and improve things for people who live here.”
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also took part in the ceremony
“Over the years, the city of West Point has made great strides to enable citizens and visitors the opportunity to access and enjoy the wonderful resources, whether you enjoy fishing, kayaking, taking a walk in the river park or just taking in the natural beauty of the river, there is something for all here in West Point,” said Jay Jamison, of USACE’s Mobile District.
West Point Councilman Gerald Ledbetter opened and closed the ceremony with a prayer.
The overlook will be constructed through a partnership between the City of West Point and Kia Motors.
