Panthers put up big numbers

The LaGrange College men’s basketball team nearly hung 100 points on Rust Wednesday night.

With Mark Wagner scoring a career-high 28 points, the Panthers (4-3) captured a 97-84 victory at Mariotti Gym.

Wagner was 11-of-17 from the field, and he was 5-of-9 on 3-point attempts.

Wagner scored 22 of his points in the second half.

Denzel Robinson also had a big night with 20 points, and he was 7-of-11 from the field, and he made a pair of 3-pointers.

Nick Mitchell chipped in with 14 points, and Patrick Dugger scored 12 points while pulling down 13 rebounds.

Mitchell added 10 rebounds.

The game was tied 36-36 with three minutes left in the first half, but the Panthers finished the half on a 9-0 run to take a 45-36 lead.

The Panthers went up by 11 points on a pair of Dugger free throws early in the second half.

After Rust got back within five, a 9-0 Panthers’ run extended the lead to 14 points.

Rust got as close as six points with 10 minutes remaining, but Wagner responded with a 3-pointer, and the Panthers had a comfortable lead the rest of the way.

LaGrange College will be on the road Monday against Rhodes.

After participating in the Country Inn & Suites Holiday Classic in Atlanta on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30, the Panthers open USA South play on Jan. 4 at Methodist.
