Wrestlers qualify for state

LaGrange and Troup will be well-represented at next week’s state wrestling sectional.

Each team had eight wrestlers qualify for the state sectional by finishing in the top four in their respective weight class at the Area 5-AAAA tournament on Saturday in Carrollton.

LaGrange wrestled its way to a third-place finish, while Troup was fifth.

Alexander won six of the 14 individual championships and walked away with the team title, and Fayette County was second.

LaGrange’s championship was captured by Emmanuel Mann, who won the 285-pound division.

For Troup, Cameron Cato finished atop the 113-pound division to claim a championship medal.

Each team had seven other wrestlers punch their ticket to the state sectional.

For LaGrange, Jacob Butler was second in the 160-pound division, and Garrett Godby (120 pounds), Qua Tucker (132 pounds), Dexter Jones (145 pounds) and Lew Hyers (195 pounds) each finished third.

Kyler Hall (138 pounds) and Guy Wegienka (182 pounds) each finished fourth.

For Troup, Dakota Wilson wrestled to a second-place finish at 120 pounds.

Adam Love (138 pounds) and Jonathan Scott (170 pounds) were third, and Tyshon Cannon (126 pounds), Preston Channell (145 pounds), John Williamson (152 pounds) and Hudson Newton (220 pounds) finished fourth.
