Former detention officer, Angel Rafael Vargas, 40, of Columbus was sentenced on Friday to five years in prison and five years probation for selling marijuana and other items to an inmate in the Troup County Jail in May of 2012.

He pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, three counts of furnishing prohibited items to an inmate and one count of bringing contraband into the jail.

Following eight months of surveillance, Vargas was fired from the jail after working there for six months when charges were brought against him.

During the time of arrest, a LaGrange resident reported that her son in custody at the jail told her about three jail officers who provided illegal contraband to inmates in exchange for payment.

According to Troup County Sheriff Public Information Officer Stewart Smith, Vargas provided marijuana, rolling paper and a cellphone charger to an inmate.
