The LaGrange High baseball team is taking a step back this summer.
While LaGrange will still have a busy summer with games, and a camp at Mississippi State, the next month won’t be as full as it has been in past years, at least on the field.
“We’ve really scaled back this summer. These guys play a lot of baseball year-round,” LaGrange coach Todd Herrington said. “I just want to get them together for a little while, and just kind of get a preview of what’s to come.”
LaGrang will have one team, and it will play around 10 games, which is about half of what it has played in previous summers.
“We’re going three weeks. I have a total of I think 12 games scheduled, and four of those are at the Mississippi State camp we’re going to,” Herrington said. “That’ll in the first week of June we’re going there. And we have a few doubleheaders scheduled.”
While the teams won’t play as many games, Herrington said the conditioning program the players participate in will be an important part of the summer schedule.
“The main thing I want our guys to do this summer is train and condition in the weight room, to get bigger, faster, stronger. That’s kind of our expectation,” Herrington said. “We have to get bigger, faster, stronger, especially in the region that we’re playing in. Columbus, Northside-Columbus, Shaw, Harris County, Hardaway, all those guys are athletic, they’re strong. We have to be able to compete with that.”
Herrington said many of the players will also be playing a bunch of games with their respective travel teams.
“These guys, they go and play travel ball, and I embrace that,” Herrington said. “It shows their level of competitiveness. And I want them to be able to do that. At the same time, I like the opportunity to see them together for a little while this summer, too.”
Herrington said the highlight of the summer will be the week-long camp at Mississippi State.
“We’ve got about 20 guys that will go to Mississippi State,” Herrington said. “Most of them will be younger guys, and they’re really excited about it. And so am I.”
