City officials have confirmed that Steak ‘n Shake will no longer be opening on Lafayette Pkwy.
The store location announcement was made last October and, according to City Manager Tom Hall, the restaurant had plans to locate off of Lafayette Pkwy behind the Comfort Inn, but could not work out an agreement regarding placement of one of the business’ sign.
Because Steak ‘n Shake would not have been located directly on the parkway, company officials wanted to place a sign on the parkway so it would be visible to passersby.
LaGrange Director of Community Development Alton West said the subject area is zoned C-3 and sign ordinances for the zone says that businesses can only have one free standing sign, one projecting sign and a wall sign on its parcel of land.
West said neighboring businesses could have allowed a Steak ‘n Shake sign on its parcel, but only if there was not the same type of signage currently on the property, which would not violate the ordinance.
Steak ‘n Shake officials ultimately could not work out an agreement with neighboring businesses, causing the company to pull out of the deal, according to city officials.
Steak ‘n Shake officials could not be reached for comment.
The restaurant is famous for its steakburgers and shakes and operates over 500 locations.
