County staff and commissioners will be considering which county roads should be designated as trucking routes and which should be restricted for tractor-trailer access in the coming weeks.
County Engineer James Emery presented a list of preliminary recommendations from staff to commissioners during a Friday County Commission work session. Emery said two roads that staff have received complaints about - Fling and Old West Point roads - are recommended to be restricted from tractor-trailer traffic and currently have the Pegasus Parkway bypass that trucks should be rerouted to take.
Roads that staff recommended to designate as trucking routes are Pegasus Parkway, Davis Road, Waugh Road, Orchard Hill Road, Ann Bailey Road, Lukken Industrial Drive and part of Upper Big Springs Road. Several other roads were under consideration by staff.
Some of the roads under consideration have bridges that are not supposed to be crossed by heavy trucks. Although a traffic counter that staff installed on some roads showed trucks over capacity still crossed the bridges up to two or three times daily.
For those roads, Emery said he likely would recommend putting the signs noting the bridges’ capacity at the entrance to the road. He said law enforcement can also help enforce trucks not crossing the bridges that are not rated to handle them.
Emery said with commissioners’ input, he hoped to have a final list of recommendations at the next work session, scheduled for Sept. 12. County Commission Chairman Ricky Wolfe suggested Emery divide the list of roads into each commissioner’s district and work with each of the commissioners to further determine how to proceed.
In another matter, Commission on Tuesday approved adding a part-time position at for the Clerk of Court office at $11 an hour, plus 84 cents per hour for payroll-associated taxes. The position, which had been left open previously, was supposed to be in this year’s budget, but was accidentally left out, said County Manager Tod Tentler. He added that the amount of money that Clerk of Courts Jackie Taylor has saved from keeping the position open previously will likely cover the additional cost, but a budget amendment may be later necessary to add some expenses to cover some costs.
Taylor told commissioners last week that her department is handling extreme amounts of work processing thousands of currently open cases from the local courts and overseeing the Board of Assessors, which is reviewing hundreds of property tax appeals. The department also needs to work on its e-filing system and catch up on backing up all documents off site to protect them from incidents like a fire, something that happened in Hancock County when its court house burned, destroying all its records, Taylor noted.
