WEST POINT — A 23-year-old man who was shot Tuesday afternoon died Wednesday morning at a hospital in Alabama.

D’Vonte Tucker of Newnan Street in LaGrange was shot in the head at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of East 14th Street in West Point and died shortly after 9 a.m. CST at the University of Alabama hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, according to Troup County Coroner Jeff Cook.

Tucker was initially taken in a personal vehicle to EAMC-Lanier hospital in Valley, Alabama, Cook said. He was later airlifted to UAB Birmingham hospital, where he was listed in critical condition late Tuesday, according to police.

His body will be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab near Atlanta for an autopsy today, Cook added.

West Point Police have “persons of interest,” but have not made any arrests in the case as of press time today, according to West Point Police Capt. Kevin Carter, the department’s field bureau commander.
