WEST POINT — A seven-month-old baby boy was killed Friday afternoon after strong winds blew a massive tree onto a home in the 1200 block of East 8th Street, said West Point Police.
There were seven people inside the house, including the infant, when the tree toppled over during a severe storm shortly after 5 p.m. The tree split the home in half, stated WPPD Capt. Kevin Carter.
The infant was asleep in its crib in a bedroom, Carter said. The rest of the family was able to get out of the house and were not hurt.
West Point firefighters and EMTs worked tirelessly to get into the area of the home where the infant was sleeping, said Carter. When they found the baby, he was already deceased. The infant was pronounced dead about 6:30 p.m., according to West Point police.
The infant’s body was taken for an autopsy, Carter said.
The home was destroyed in the storm. The West Point Police Department put the family up in a hotel for the night and bought them dinner, said Carter.
