LaGRANGE — Hurricane Matthew will miss Troup County, and some people in its path are actually finding refuge in the area.
Spencer Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Thursday there are no signs the Category 4 hurricane will come through Troup County, and that the area won’t see any bad weather related to the storm.
“The windiest day will be on Saturday and the winds will be 10-15 mph, but that’s really it,” he said.
Some hotels in the area have had requests for rooms from people evacuating the storm.
An employee from the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel in LaGrange said they have had several reservations from people fleeing the hurricane’s path and were booked.
Asia McNair, the front desk manager at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, said the hotel was booked, but more because of it being the weekend than for people seeking refuge. However, late Thursday afternoon, she said that 15 people from Savannah had called to see if there was anything available.
“While a few evacuees have stopped by our office today, we have not seen the numbers like our friends in Atlanta and Augusta have,” stated Page L. Estes, president of the LaGrange Troup County Chamber of Commerce, in an email. “We will certainly stay in touch with our lodging partners as the conditions may change. My parents were affected by the mandatory evacuation in South Carolina and arrived in LaGrange last night.”
Additionally, Jan Nichols, the director of marketing/public relations of WellStar West Georgia Medical Center, said they have not received any transferred patients due to the storm.
“However, we are monitoring the number of available beds should we be asked to help care for hospital patients or nursing home residents who need to be transferred from the evacuated areas,” she said.
After leaving more than 100 people dead in the Caribbean, the hurricane hit parts of Florida Thursday and is expected to stay in Florida Friday. It is supposed to hit Georgia and South Carolina over the weekend, according to the Associated Press.
The weather in LaGrange on Friday is set to be 81 degrees, cloudy and with winds up to 10 mph. It will be 84 degrees Saturday, sunny and with winds up to 16 mph.
