The incident happened at the Budget Inn at 100 Hill Street around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday.

SIU investigators received a tip two people were selling illegal drugs from a motel room, the police report stated.

The investigators smelled marijuana as they approached the room and made contact with a man as he walked out the motel room door, according to the report.

As investigators attempted to detain the man, he reportedly threw himself over a second story guard rail, the report said. Officers tried to grab him before he hit the pavement, but the man allegedly slipped out of their grasps.

The suspect landed on his feet and took off running, the report read.

A SIU investigator attempted to catch the man, but fell as he ran down the stairs.

The man was caught and arrested a short time later, officials said.

The investigator was checked out by AMR and is expected to be okay.
