A routine patrol by two LaGrange detectives turned into a brief chase and big drug bust about 9:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Wright Street.
Investigators Ray Ham and Jarrod Anderson said they noticed a male acting suspicious and attempting to conceal himself along a woodline. Ham said they stopped their patrol car and tried to talk to the man, who immediately turned around and ran toward Cannon Street.
Anderson chased after the suspect, while Ham moved the patrol car around the corner to block the suspect’s path, a police report states.
The suspect cut back across Wright Street towards Crovat Street and both investigators chased him, Ham said.
Another officer joined the pursuit and directed investigators to a home in the 100 block of Crovat Street, where Ham said he came face to face with the suspect. According to the report, police then arrested the man without incident.
Ham said the suspect, identified as Carlos Demorris Lindsey, 28, of LaGrange, smelled strongly of marijuana.
They searched Lindsey and allegedly found a total $368 in four different pockets. According to the report, a witness told officers Lindsey threw something under a home on Crovat Street when he ran by. Officers said they found several bags containing drugs near where Lindsey was caught.
Investigators said they discovered a bag containing 1 ounce of suspected marijuana, two bags of suspected cocaine totaling 13 grams, a bag with 13 grams of suspected crack cocaine, a bag with 13 grams of suspected MDMA — also known as ecstasy or Molly — and a bag with 25 Xanax pills.
Lindsey was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of MDMA with intent to distribute, possession of Xanax with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, abandonment of dangerous drugs and obstruction.
In another incident, Special Investigation Unit officers made another bust during a traffic stop around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Snelson Street.
The investigators found a parked silver Cadillac blocking a driveway and spoke with the driver. They said an overwhelming smell of marijuana was coming from the vehicle.
The officers said they searched the car with consent from the driver and found a white plastic bag with an estimated 3.5 ounces of suspected marijuana and a digital scale that officers said is used to aid in the sale of marijuana and allegedly had a green leafy residue.
The suspect, identified as Edward Charles Johnson, 39, of LaGrange, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, felony marijuana possession and possession of a drug-related object.
Attempted armed robbery
Detectives with the LaGrange Police Department this morning were looking for a suspect in a bizarre attempted armed robbery at the CVS at 300 Morgan St. around 3:30 a.m.
The store clerk told officers a man entered the store just after 3 a.m., first to buy some candy, then asked to break a $100 bill and then to buy a pair of Dr. Scholls insoles. He then left the store.
Detectives said on the store surveillance video, the cameras show the man remained just outside the doors, peeping inside the building.
The clerk said the suspect then returned around 3:30 a.m. with his right hand underneath his shirt and told her to give him all the money from the register.
The clerk told officers she refused and the man left the store.
Officers searched for the suspect but did not locate him.
The clerk also told police she never saw a weapon, but thought whatever was under the suspect’s shirt looked like the point of a knife. She also said the man smelled of alcohol.
Detectives with LPD’s Criminal Investigation Section are looking into the case.
