LaGRANGE — Heavy rains flooded some areas and high winds were expected today to add to severe weather today.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City announced a flood watch starting 4:15 a.m. and ending at 7 p.m.

A rain gauge downtown recorded 7 inches of rain by 9 a.m.

The weather service predicted minor flooding west central Georgia. Damaging winds up to 40 and 50 mph and a possible isolated tornado were the main threats predicted with any thunderstorm development today. Trees also could fall due to oversaturated soil.

“Some areas have already seen 1 to 3 inches (of rain) recently with an additional 1 to 3 inches possible before the system exits eastward by tonight,” states an advisory from the NWS in Peachtree City. “… Increasing instability combined with strong wind shear will allow for some strong and isolated severe storm potential, mainly across central Georgia. Due to the strong vertical wind shear and its orientation to storm development, an isolated brief tornado will also be possible.”

The weather is predicted to calm by Tuesday, but sporadic showers are expected to continue with the possibility of thunderstorms through Friday. Temperatures are expected to range from the upper 50s to low 70s.

The sun is expected to peak out again this weekend, but showers and potential thunderstorms are still possible Saturday and Sunday, according to the NWS.
