LaGRANGE — The Georgia State Patrol released the name of the driver killed just after 5 a.m. Friday in a head-on collision on Roanoke Road.

Troopers said George A. Yates, 72, of Five Points, Alabama, died in the crash.

Yates was driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pick up truck when the vehicle collided with a 2009 Peterbilt Conventional commercial tractor trailer, GSP stated. No further details were available this morning on the collision.

Yates was the former LaGrange chief of police and left the department in 1995.

GSP said the tractor-trailer was driven by Jonathan Gianangeli, 27, of LaGrange.

According to Troup County sheriff’s deputies who assisted troopers with the accident, Gianangeli was taken to West Georgia Medical Center with a leg injury.

The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team, or SCRT, remained on the scene for hours Friday morning investigating the crash.

The full report has not yet been released.

Visitation for Yates is set for Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Striffler Hamby Mortuary in LaGrange. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Callaway Baptist Church.

A full obituary for Yates appears on page 2A of today’s edition.
