Man accused of holding grandparents against will

A man is accused of holding his grandparents against their will Saturday and taking their phones so they could not call police.

The older couple said the grandson came to their home about 8:30 a.m. with a woman, whom they said couldn’t be there. The grandson got agitated and said he was just going to take a shower and leave, but never did.

When the grandmother started “getting on to him” about leaving, he pushed her down and took her phone when she threatened to call 911, the police report states. When her husband came out of a bedroom after hearing the noise, the grandson allegedly wrestled him to the ground, tearing the buttons from his shirt and breaking his glasses, and took his phone as well.

The couple said the grandson held them against their will in their living room for 20 to 30 minutes before their son — the grandson’s father — called and heard them asking for help. He then called police. The grandson left before police arrived.

Police issued warrants for the grandson on charges of simple battery, false imprisonment and interfering with an emergency call.

Woman found rolling on ground

A woman was taken to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center for evaluation after she was found rolling and flailing in the grass next to the front entrance of Sweetland Amphitheatre on Sunday morning.

Officers went to the area about 11:30 a.m. after a caller reported the woman rolling in the dirt and said she appeared to be under the influence of something. A police report states the woman was talking irrationally and told officers she had taken something.

Police called EMS to take the woman to the hospital. She kicked, flailed and yelled as officers and EMS officials initially tried to get her onto a stretcher, then officers handcuffed her and were able to get her into the ambulance.

Police searched her belongings, which contained nothing drug related, the police report states. Medical officials said she spit out part of a plastic bag and believed she may have swallowed some type of narcotic.

No charges were filed.

Elderly man accused of hit and run, DUI

A 76-year-old man was charged with DUI after he allegedly backed into a car and drove away shortly before 9 p.m. Friday on Commerce Avenue.

Police found the man’s truck parked in the Publix parking lot and it fit the description of the vehicle that backed into a car nearby at Dollar Tree. The police report states the man also allegedly shoplifted about $30 of merchandise from Publix.

The reporting officer said the man’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and he smelled of alcohol. He also allegedly had a partly empty beer and two other partly empty liquor bottles in the truck.

The man passed some sobriety tests and denied driving the truck, but a portable breath test showed his blood alcohol content was 0.11, and he didn’t consent to another breath test, according to the police report.

The man was taken to Troup County Jail.
