A woman reported that a pair intentionally ran over a cat Friday night in the parking lot of Burger King at 801 New Franklin Road, and that the animal appeared to have been tortured.

The witness told police that the two people, a man and woman, drove up to the restaurant in a red car and threw the feline out of the car and onto pavement, then backed over it. The witness said her child also witnessed the incident. The car then left and the occupants were laughing, the woman said.

The woman told police she went over to the cat, noting it was dead and its eyes were missing; she believed it had been tortured. She gave police a tag number that she said was on the vehicle, which officers traced to an address in the county.

Officers had not determined the identity of the suspects at the time of the report.

70-year-old charged after allegedly taking swing at man

A 70-year-old man faces a misdemeanor reckless conduct charge after he allegedly tried to punch and threatened a man.

Police were called to a residence in the 100 block of Whitaker Street on Sunday after the alleged incident. The victim said he was dropping off a woman when the septuagenarian came up to him, made a comment and tried to punch him. The man dodged the punch, but told police the elder man, who had a pistol, then said he should have shot the victim.

The alleged attacker showed up at the home while officers were there and admitted to the incident, according to an officer’s report, saying he had been helping a woman – whom the victim had dropped off – because she had been on drugs and he didn’t feel she should be associated with the man, who he believed was on drugs. He said the victim also had sent an inappropriate text to the woman, and the elder man told the officer he only regretted that he didn’t land the punch.

The elder man was arrested and taken to Troup County Jail.

Man found dead in home

Police this morning were investigating the Sunday death of a LaGrange man on Brown Street.

The 43-year-old man was found not breathing on the bathroom floor by his girlfriend, according to a police report. The girlfriend told police the man seemed fine when she left for church earlier that morning, but discovered his body when she returned and called 911 about 1:30 p.m.

The body was taken to West Georgia Medical Center for an autopsy.

No further information was available this morning.

Burglaries, thefts

• The owner of a property in the 100 block of West Cannon Street reported Saturday that someone entered the residence within the last week and took a stove valued at $560 and broke windows valued at $500.

• A burglar apparently used a brick to break into a home in the 300 block of Wilkes Street through a back door Saturday and ransacked the residence, taking an iPad valued at $300 and Timberland boots valued at $150.

• A resident of the 200 block of Peachtree Street reported that a burglar entered her home, stole a 42-inch TV valued at $230 and ransacked her child’s room Saturday. The reporting officer noted that it appeared someone kicked in the back door.

• A LaGrange man reported that he received a call from someone alleging to be with CharterBank on Friday or Saturday, who told him his account had been compromised and asked for his debit card number. He complied and later discovered $503 had been fraudulently taken from his account.

• A woman flagged down an officer Sunday on Short Street and told him she was searching for her son’s bike after it had apparently been taken while he was at a home on Troup Street shortly before.

Damage

A LaGrange woman reported that a vandal scratched an expletive into the hood of her 2008 Dodge Avenger, possibly while it was parked in the 100 block of Wynnwood Drive early Sunday.
