A man reported Monday afternoon that he let a woman borrow the keys to a car he was using, but then she took the car.

The man told police a woman approached him about 7 a.m. at PCA Food Store, 1200 Hogansville Road, and wanted a ride to Wood Glen Apartments at 64 N. Cary St. The man complied and went to his apartment on the same street, but the female knocked on his door about 7:30 a.m., saying she left something in the car and needed to retrieve it.

He gave her the keys to the vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, and told the woman she could get the item out, but she took the car and didn’t return. He reported the incident to police at about 5:25 p.m., according to the police report, and when the officer asked why he waited so long, he reportedly told an officer, “he was giving her the benefit of the doubt.”

The car belongs to the man’s employer, he told police. He didn’t know the woman’s name, only a nickname and gave the officer a description. The officer found a possible identity on the alleged thief, but was unable to get in touch with her.

Police placed a look-out order on the vehicle and were investigating.

Man faces gun, pot charges

A man faces felony charges after police allegedly found him with a gun and marijuana while passing through a checkpoint on Commerce Avenue about 12:09 a.m. Monday.

The officer who checked the driver’s license said it was expired. Another officer came up to the car and said he could smell marijuana.

The officers asked the driver, identified as Alvin Jerome Brown Jr., 39, whose address was unavailable, to get out of the car and one officer said he then saw a gun in the driver’s seat. Officers placed Brown in handcuffs as one officer took the weapon, according to the police report.

Officers searched Brown and found a bag of suspected marijuana. They then discovered Brown was a convicted felon.

He was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving with an expired license.
