WHITMIRE — An account has been set up at First Citizens in Whitmire for the family of 9-year-old Bennett Dalton, the Whitmire youth who died Monday night after being hit by a tractor-trailer while on his bicycle.
Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said Dalton was treated at the scene of the accident at Church and Odell streets and then airlifted to Palmetto Richland for further treatment. The youth died at 9:09 p.m., Newton said. The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m.
“This is truly a tragic loss for this family and community,” Newton said. “Our prayers are with Bennetts’ loved ones and friends during this very difficult time.”
Whitmire councilman Michael Thomas set up the account to help the family with hospital bills, medical expenses and funeral expenses. People can also drop by the bank to write sympathy notes for the family.
The S.C. Highway Patrol said the collision happened on Church Street near Joe’s Market. The youth was leaving his driveway and was headed south when he was struck by a tractor trailer headed west on Church Street. The youth was not wearing a helmet.
The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
The accident remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol, Whitmire City Police, Newberry County Sheriff’s Department and the Newberry County Coroner’s Office.
