A new scam is targeting unsuspecting residents with the scammers telling victims there’s a warrant out for their arrest through the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.
According to TCSO, several people have contacted the sheriff’s office about an individual calling them, saying in order to avoid being arrested they should immediately send him money through a Money Pak or Green Dot card transaction. Deputies said that, unfortunately, there are people who have fallen victim to this scam and lost several hundred dollars in the process.
The Troup County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who’s received a phone call to contact their office at 706-883-1616, or go to the Sheriff’s Office off Sam Walker Drive to file a report.
Deputies want to remind people the sheriff’s office will not contact people over the phone to collect money in regards to a warrant. Sheriff James Woodruff also asks people to use caution when giving out personal information and never perform a financial transaction over the phone with someone you do not know.
