Pyne Road Park will fill with the sounds of classic Southern rock next month with the Junior Service League’s “Pickin’ in the Park.”

Benefiting the West Georgia Health Community Cancer Center, the event will feature two classic Southern Rock bands: the Marshall Tucker Band and Wet Willie, as well as an up and coming Georgia-born Southern rock singer Paris Luna and her band. The concert is scheduled for Sept. 21.

Formed in 1972, the Marshall Tucker Band is credited with helping create the genre of Southern rock. For more than 40 years and in various forms the band has been performing around the country and released a number of albums. Among their more well known hits are the songs, “Can’t You See,” “Fire on the Mountain” and “Heard it in a Love Song.” The only original member of the band still performing with them is Doug Gray, who will appear here.

Named for a childhood prank, Wet Willie is partially composed of original members, though it was put together a few years before the Marshall Tucker Band. Contributing to the Southern rock genre, the band earned a name for itself in the 1970s with its hit, “Keep on Smilin’.” Like the Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie has been touring for many years.

The name Paris Luna may not be well known yet, but she and her band are an up and coming stars on the Southern Rock scene. Luna and the band have just released her second album, “Between the Ditches,” featuring songs such as “My America” and “Boots and Bangles.” The band’s website touts that “Paris Luna is a dichotomy. It IS the name of the band AND the stage name of the multi-faceted front woman who leads it.”

The Junior Service League is looking at expanding this concert into an annual event. According to a JSL press release, “our goal is to make Pickin’ in the Park an annual event and add another reason Troup County is a great place to live or at least visit for a fun weekend.”

The concert will be held Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. Gates will open at 5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at pickininthepark.org. General admission is $25 online or tickets may be purchased at the gate the day of the performance for $30.
