Parts of the downtown area were blocked off Thursday afternoon after officers received information about a suspicious package near Battle Street.

According to a police report, a Battle Street business called police at about 3:40 p.m. after someone had informed her that a bookbag had been sitting on the sidewalk near Church Street since about 1 p.m. All surrounding business were notified by police about the suspicious bookbag and were instructed to clear the area.

The area was lined with crime scene tape and traffic was closed on parts of Church Street, Ridley Ave., Battle Street, North Lewis and Smith Street. The sheriff’s office bomb K-9 unit responded to the scene.

As officers were beginning to investigate the bookbag, a man arrived at the location claiming that the bookbag belonged to his daughter, who he said had left it on the sidewalk after they attended a service on Church Street.

The K-9 did not alert on anything hazardous inside the bag and it was released to the male.
