Former TCN employee arrested for felony theft

A former Troup County News employee has been charged with felony theft by taking for stealing thousands of dollars from the business.
According to Troup County Sheriff’s Office investigators, James Edward Murphy, 29, had been stealing newspapers from boxes at various locations and stealing money from them over the course of 10 months. Murphy had previously worked in the distribution department for the TCN and still had a key to the newspaper boxes, allowing him to access the coin department of the boxes.
Murphy was seen by investigators this week, during a special detail, taking newspapers from a box and dropping them off at an undisclosed location.
Investigators say that Murphy was no longer employed by the Troup County News at the time that investigators received the complaint regarding the suspicion of theft earlier this week.
Murphy was arrested and taken to the Troup County Jail Thursday and was later released on a $10,000 property bond.
