Fast start for Troup

The Troup Lady Tigers are off and running.


The Lady Tigers got a new season off to a quick start with a dominant 67-51 victory over Harris County Tuesday night at home.


It was a nice confidence boost for a team that won just two games last season.


“It was great to see all the things we’ve been working on in practice pay off in the game,” Troup head coach Carla Thornton said. “They’ve all been working hard.”


The Lady Tigers took their lumps last season with an inexperienced lineup, and many of those players are now a year older and a year better.


A handful of newcomers have also arrived to give the team a lift.


In Tuesday’s game, one of those returnees, junior D’Aushanique Sanders, led the way with 24 points, and she made a pair of 3-pointers.


Sophomore Gabby Lockhart added 12 points, and freshman Ahkya Mitchell and Caldwell each scored 10 points.


Caldwell scored all of her points in the third period.


The Lady Tigers were up 15-12 after the first period, and they raced to a 30-18 lead at the half.


Troup then put 20 points on the scoreboard in the third quarter to claim a 50-33 lead, and it rolled to the win in the final period.


“It was a great win. And it was a big crowd,” Thornton said. “Hopefully we’ll give them a reason to keep coming back.”


Troup was supposed to play Callaway on Friday, but that game has been postponed because Callaway’s football team is playing in the semifinals against Buford.


Callaway’s next game will be Saturday at Bowdon.
