The Troup High wrestling team will tune up for Saturday’s area duals by hosting a six-team tournament today.

The tournament, which was originally going to be called the Tiger Duals, has been re-named the Dariel Daniel Duals in honor of the long-time and successful Troup coach who was killed in a car accident in November.

The six teams will each get five matches under their belt, which Troup coach Chris Mitchem figures will be extremely valuable with the Area 5-AAAA duals just a few days away.

“This is really just to get mat time right before region,” Mitchem said.

Along with Troup, the participating teams in today’s tournament are Bowdon, Northside-Columbus, Berkmar, Newnan and Jonesboro.

The area duals will be held at Alexander High, and the top two teams will qualify for the state duals.

Normally, Mitchem would use a tournament like this as a way to get everyone on the team a chance to get some mat time.

With the area duals so close, though, Mitchem said only the men who will be wrestling on Saturday will compete.

“I really can’t waste any matches. That’s the whole main thing,” Mitchem said. “Most of my JV guys are going to be helping me out with the tournament. I have to get the guys who are wrestling Saturday their five matches.”

This will be Troup’s first varsity competition since Dec. 21 when it participated in the Hardaway Invitational.

The Tigers were supposed to compete in a tournament in Fayette County on Saturday, but Mitchem decided to hold them out of that event for a couple of reasons.

“A lot of the kids are still injured, and a lot of the kids are still trying to get down to the proper weight class,” Mitchem said.
