The Lafayette Christian girls’ basketball team was one basket away from playing for a region championship.


Facing Solid Rock in the GISA Region 4-A tournament semifinals on Thursday, Lafayette Christian ended up on the losing end of a 43-42 score.


Lafayettte Christian will play for third-place today, and win or lose, it will participate in the state tournament next week.


Trailing by four, the Lady Cougars got within two points on a pair of free throws late in the game.


After a turnover, the Lady Cougars got a couple of looks at the basket, but they were unable to convert.


After another turnover, a Lafayette Christian player made one-of-two free-throw attempts to make it a one-point game.


After the second attempt missed, the ball bounced around, and a Solid Rock player came up with the ball and the clock ran out.


Morgan Douglass had a big game for the Lady Cougars with 16 points, six assists and six steals, and Makenzie Alder added 15 points and seven rebounds.


LAGRANGE ACADEMY: The Warriors were unable to keep pace with Furtah Prep in the semifinals of the Region 4-AA semifinals on Thursday.


Furtah Prep won 68-33 to advance to today’s region-championship game, and LaGrange Academy will play Griffin Christian at 5:30 p.m. today in the third-place game.


The Warriors have already secured a spot in the state tournament, which begins next week.


LaGrange Academy earned its state bid with a win over Flint River on Tuesday in the first round of the region tournament.
