For the second time in his stellar collegiate career, LaGrange College’s Cory Howard is a tournament champion.
Howard took top honors in the Wynlakes Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala., and he led the Panthers to a second-place team finish.
Howard was one shot off the pace after the first round, and he shot a 73 on Tuesday to win by one stroke over Wittenberg’s David Wetterich.
Howard had an even-par 72 in the first round.
Howard took a two-shot lead into the final hole, and he bogeyed the 18th hole to win by a stroke.
The Panthers shot a 308 in the second round to finish with a two-day total of 608, and Wittenberg won the tournament with a 592.
LaGrange College’s Osborn Theam had rounds of 75 and 76 to finish in sixth place, and Anthony Scolapio posted scores of 77 and 81 to finish 24th.
Logan Lanier (76-86) and Freddie Wolford (84-78) each finished tied for 33rd.
LaGrange College, which came into the tournament ranked 10th in the most recent NCAA Division III golfstat.com poll, will return to action on April 7 for the Emory Invitational in Atlanta.
HIGH-SCHOOL GOLF: In the Lady Granger Invitational on Tuesday at Highland Country Club, Northside took the top spot with a 175, and Woodward Academy was second at 179.
LaGrange finished fourth, with Bailey Parker and Calle Ann Chastain each shooting a 114.
