Sydney Emerson scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the second half, to lift LaGrange Academy’s girls’ soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Griffin Christian on Monday.
The game was tied at 1-1 when Emerson scored with less than 10 minutes remaining, and LaGrange Academy’s defense made that one-goal lead stand up.
The Lady Warriors (4-0 overall) improved to 2-0 in GISA Region 4-AA.
“That’s another good win against a quality opponent today,” LaGrange Academy coach Mike Petite said. “We had to grind this one out playing with only 11 players and having to move several players around the field but I told the team that winning games like this will pay off for us later this season and into the playoffs. I am very proud of this team.”
The Lady Warriors struck first, with Emerson scoring on an assist from Sydney Allen seven minutes into the game.
Griffin Christian’s Brandy Winkler tied it early in the second half, and it remained deadlocked until Caitlynn Croft delivered a nice pass to Emerson, who put the ball in the net for her 13th goal of the season.
Petite said defenders Jo Wagner, Raina Modi and Brandi Smalls played well, and goal keeper Marybeth Cottle had some key saves.
LaGrange Academy will host Trinity on Thursday at 5 p.m.
