The Callaway High boys’ soccer team enjoyed a banner regular season to secure a home game for the state playoffs.

The Cavaliers are hoping that home-field edge will help them beat Jackson on Thursday in the opening round of the Class AAA state playoffs.

That’ll be a part of a busy week of soccer for local teams, beginning with today’s game between the LaGrange High and Cedartown boys’ teams at Callaway Stadium.

The Callaway High girls’ team will be on the road against Pike County on Friday for its first-round game.

Also this week, a pair of local teams will look to keep their seasons alive in the GISA state tournament.

The Lafayette Christian School boys’ team, which had a first-round bye, will host First Presbyterian on Thursday.

LaGrange Academy’s girls team, which beat Valwood 11-0 in the first round, will host defending state champion First Presbyterian on Saturday.

Callaway’s Region 4-AAA schedule began on a down note with a 3-0 loss to Central-Carroll, but the Cavaliers won their final five region games.

The Cavaliers ended up tied for the top spot in the region, but Central-Carroll got the number one seed based on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Cavaliers (12-5-1 overall) wrapped up the regular season with a 2-1 win over Kendrick last week, with Kevin Craig and Kyle Jenkins each scoring a goal.

The Lady Cavaliers, meanwhile, finished fourth in Region 4-AAA, and they’ll take on Region 2-AAA champion Pike County on Friday.

In the GISA state tournament, Lafayette Christian and LaGrange Academy are both among the final eight teams remaining in the state tournament.

LaGrange Academy, which won the Region 4-AA championship, began its state-tournament run with an easy home win over Valwood.

The assignment will be a much tougher one on Saturday against the defending state champs.

First Presbyterian finished tied with Frederica Academy in Region 2-AAA, and Frederica earned the top seed on the tiebreaker.

First Presbyterian beat Piedmont 5-0 in the first round.

Lafayette Christian School, meanwhile, was given a first-round bye after winning the Region 4-AA championship.

First Presbyterian, the number two seed from Region 2-AA, beat Trinity Christian 3-0 in the first round.
