If we never need something we probably don’t care what it involves or what good it is. I was one of those people until July 28.

While shopping at Wal-Mart I became suddenly ill. In the past I thought people worked there because they needed jobs. How wrong I was. The great people there immediately called 911, made sure I was comfortable, asked me who they should contact and in all manner showed care and concern.

My heart really goes out to the poor person who got stuck cleaning up the stock after my vomiting on it. My opinion is they aren’t working there for jobs, they are working there because it is a good gathering place for angels.

The 911 crew showed up; they turned out to be firemen. I realized what they have to contend with. They get the emergency call to get somewhere NOW, walk into a situation that doesn’t match any particular symptoms — no heart attack, no baby on the way, no injury.

They were all cool, checked all vitals constantly, kept me well-informed of what they were doing, what they were or were not discovering. During all this, once they discovered I had humor and wasn’t hysterical, they did their work with outstanding efficiency and thoroughness and kept me relaxed with their humor.

The ambulance ride to the hospital gave me another staff of warm, wonderful, capable people. Okay, they are trained to do what they do, but there is a difference in doing just a job or doing it with care.

Here is the only place I actually got a name. Tray was my nurse and he couldn’t have been better. Keeping me informed, making sure all my needs were met, checking on me during the waiting time for test results.

He was outstanding considering none of us knew what the problem was. I have been exposed to emergency rooms where the staff acts like they are to busy to take care of the emotional side of unexpected illness.

West Georgia cared about ME and for that I can’t thank you enough.

I am a member of Saint Peter’s Catholic Church. As it turned out, on this particular day all my family was either out of town or I didn’t have numbers, and my phone was dead. I didn’t know who to call or what to do.

I had Wal-Mart call the church. Father Patrick is a very busy man, and I am not one of the movers and shakers of the Parish. That man showed up, sat with me for a number of hours until I was released and then drove me back to get my car. He could have sent someone, but he took time for ME.

I am sure I did not meet every good person in LaGrange that day, but I know I met people that will always get my respect and admiration for what they do.
