With a runoff for the Republican candidate still slated, Clay Bryant is joining the race for Troup County sheriff.

The man who helped bring the killers of Fred Wilkerson, Gwendolyn Moore, Paul McKeen, Vieng Phovixay and Jimmy Clark to justice will qualify today to run for sheriff as an independent in November.

Bryant needs 1,955 qualifying signatures and will be turning in about 2,600 Monday, the second step of qualifying.

“I’ve been involved in law enforcement for most of my working life and I feel like I bring a lot to the table,” he said. “I will bring new ideas and programs to the sheriff’s office that will see the office improve.”

He’s running as an independent because he believes the sheriff’s office shouldn’t have a political affiliation, Bryant, 57, said.

“Social and economic status should have nothing to do with the problems that are brought to the sheriff’s office,” he said. “There’s just right and wrong and the law. There shouldn’t be any inference that politics could project the outcome.”

Bryant, who ran unsuccessfully for coroner four years ago, was dubbed “Cold Case Clay” by the Atlanta Journal Constitution after his involvement in the unsolved murders of Wilkerson and Moore earned him national attention. He was the Coweta Judicial Circuit investigator who reopened the cases and found the killers. His work on the Wilkerson and Moore cases was chronicled on “48 Hours” and “Cold Case Files” and he was interviewed by Anne Coulter.

“Of those cases, there are now five people who are serving life terms in prison,” Bryant said. “People had forgotten those cases. As sheriff, I won’t forget.”

His law enforcement career began with the Georgia State Patrol as a radio operator and trooper. From 1981 to 1992 he was the Hogansville chief of police, where he also earned paramedic certification and was a paramedic instructor.

He worked for the private sector for eight years before working for the district attorney from 2002 to 2006. He has spent the last six years as the Georgia Public Defender investigator.

He graduated from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in 1980 and he and his wife Beth have five children, Frank, Mary Beth, Ashley, Emily and Clayton. He’s been a volunteer coach with Troup County Parks and Recreation, a wrestling referee with the Georgia High School Athletic Association and drove the bus for Troup County Schools’ athletic trips.

Bryant was named one of the top 10 cold case investigators in the nation in the book “Justice Delayed,” by Jack Branson. He’s also been recognized by the Naval Criminal Investigative Services as one of the most prolific cold case investigators.

If elected, Bryant will bring proactive and fair law enforcement to all parts of the county, he said. He’ll restructure the department to improve coverage and visibility and bring back resource officers to middle and high schools that are located in the county.

“I will dedicate more resources to drug enforcement, because drugs relate to the majority of other crimes,” he said.

Bryant also wants to improve the department’s relationships with other law enforcement jurisdictions in Troup County and adjoining areas and encourage and reward professional training in the department. He also will offer his facilities for training by other law enforcement agencies, like the Troup County marshal’s office.

He also will “provide complete transparency” with the department’s budget, providing an annual report on what’s done with money confiscated through drug seizures. He will support the schools with security and improve security at the jail for employees and inmates.

“I will work diligently and creatively with the county to improve services with as little cost to the taxpayers as possible,” he said.

Bryant said he will also have deputies enforce traffic laws around the county and assist the state patrol with response to simple, non-injury accidents.

“I will be everyone’s sheriff, every day,” he said. “I will be responsive to the people and actively seek justice, as my history reflects.”

First of all thank you in advance to LDN for allowing my opinion to be on here with everyone else’s. To the readers this is strictly my personal opinion and it may differ from yours but, before dismissing or degrading it please consider it as I certainly do that myself with yours. …Donny Turner was a decent Sheriff prior to his ego taking over control of his actions. The fact that he personally pulled a deputy off patrol to go harass someone campaigning against him is a prime example of this. Not only is that awful petty but it is borderline unlawful. The phone call was not a big surprise as much as it was that someone finally recorded him in one of his famous outbursts….many have heard about them but no one has ever recorded one before. Up until this year, how many programs for the youth have been absent? The junior deputy and Champs were a distant memory until this election year. The Neighborhood Watch programs have dwindled from the time when Sheriff Turner was in his prime as well. The School resource officer program is gone too. Speak with our neighboring County Sheriffs and see how terrible the communication and working environment is between them….non-existent to tense is what I’ve been hearing. Mr. Woodruff had a tough time dealing with being in power before as Chief Deputy and then later as Jail Administrator…due in part to his poor people management skills and his being brought up in the ranks and schooled In the trade by Donny Turner. Now despite the fact that he is a skilled and prolific politician what else has he done with his time in law enforcement? I have asked and no one can ever recall him solving any crimes or ever being an actual investigator of crimes. Some have told me he spent the balance of his career on patrol or in Donny’s Office as his right hand man. I’ve heard the accounts of Mister Bryant and his troubles in the District Attorney’s Office. The best I can get from some folks that claim to know is he failed to go to a training class while in a resort area. I have also seen in the newspapers, online and on network TV his now famous exploits as a criminal investigator. I can say for myself, the times I have had encounters with Mr. Bryant have always been positive and informative. The man comes from a law enforcement family in that his much loved by many father the late Buddy Bryant was the Chief of Hogansville and actually was elected Sheriff before his untimely death in the eighties. As stated above his education level and experience places him well in the qualified zone even though he does have a very down home country boy demeanor. I know the voters will ultimately decide who will be our Sheriff but, my hopes are that the right one is picked and Troup County can come together again and start back our focus on ridding this community of crime. We can do this enormous task by working together again with the Sheriff’s Department and have an agency and leader we can all have faith in and be proud of by carefully voting the right man in. Just my opinion but, Bryant seems to be that man for this job.

Definitely will make the race more interesting. The very idea that Turner could use an on-duty officer to advance a mini vendetta against a campaign worker is simply inexcusable for a man in his position. I'm not sure why everyone made such a big deal about that ugly phone call because while it wasn't right, it pales in comparison to the use of an officer to harass someone using the pretext of some minor and possibly feigned parking infraction.

That is the real problem here. He should really be stepping down, not seeking re-election. Unfortunately, a lot of folks in Troup I guess don't have a problem with a Sheriff doing that. Personally . . .I do.

This post will not have back biting, backstabbing, false accusations, innuendos nor anything else to bring our citizens of Troup County down. Lord knows we have had enough of that lately. What it will say however is simply this. Yes, Sheriff Donny Turner can perform the job as our sheriff, he's had 20 years to learn the job, he should know how. BUT !! He has let the citizens of this county down and everyone knows it. He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and simply must pay the price and go! My concern was would we have someone who could replace him. James Woodruff certainly makes a good possibility. He worked at the sheriff's office for several years and knows the workings of the office and could step in quite easily. However, what I dislike about this idea is He has a bad history out there and would he be able to lay that aside and start brand new without any animosity towards anyone there. I have my doubts. Well,as always, when you are in need, the good Lord steps up and answers your prayers. Today, the man we all need and should elect and is more qualified than any other candidate has taken on the challenge and has stepped forward to let us know he is here to help make us forget the old and celebrate the new. Do not let this opportunity presented us slip by. It is our duty to finally get this right. Thanks

Clay is a fine man, but he too carries baggage associated with a career in law enforcement. The fact is, you wil not find a law man around who has never made a mistake. It comes with the fact that they are human and the fact that they are in the constant public eye

It was once said in a book about law enforcement careers ".... no one, but no one, will escape with their professional virginity in tact".

The point is Woodruff or Bryant either one would make a decent Sheriff..... Donny just needs to go.
