The Callaway Cavaliers are second to none.

The Cavaliers came into Thursday’s game against Douglass at Callaway Stadium needing a win to wrap up the Region 4-AAA championship, and they made it happen in resounding fashion.

The Cavaliers charged out to a 47-0 victory after the first quarter, and they went on to claim a 54-16 victory.

Callaway (8-1 overall) improved to 6-0 in region play while wrapping up the top seed.

Callaway concludes the regular season next week with a home game against Rockmart.

The Cavaliers will be at home for at least the first two rounds of the state playoffs.

“We love playing at home at Callaway Stadium. Our kids love the Sprint Turf. It means a lot to us,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “But we’ve got another big week next week against Rockmart, and that’s our next step right now.”

Callaway figured to have an easy time of it against an over-matched Douglass (1-8) squad, and it was no contest.

The Cavaliers scored on offense, special teams and defense in the opening quarter to notch an impressive seven touchdowns in the first 12 minutes.

When the second quarter began, Wiggins was already substituting freely, with most of the starters taking the final three quarters off.

Callaway quarterback Tez Parks said the team was focused on looking sharp against an inferior foe.

“We had to play our ballgame,” Parks said. “We couldn’t come out and take it easy. We needed to come out and play like this.”

The Cavaliers found the end zone for the first time less than two minutes into the game, with Devon Rosser scoring on a 40-yard run.

Callaway’s next score came courtesy of special teams.

Cortez Leonard blocked a punt, and Michael Williams scooped up the ball and went about five yards for the score.

A few minutes later, Wilson Lindsey beat the Douglass defense for a 32-yard touchdown run, and Callaway was up 20-0 with 7:54 still to play in the first quarter.

Moments later, it looked like Leonard had expanded the lead when he returned an interception for a touchdown, but that score was wiped out because of a penalty.

The Cavaliers went on to score anyway.

After ripping off a 26-yard run, Parks threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Pedy Leverette, and it was 27-0.

After Rosser picked off another pass, the Cavaliers scored two plays later on a 15-yard run by Lindsey, and it was a 33-0 game with 3:34 left in the first quarter.

After a Douglass three-and-out and a punt, the Cavaliers scored on the next play, with Terry Godwin catching a screen pass from Parks and outracing the defense for a 39-yard touchdown.

Seconds later, Callaway capped its explosive first quarter with Godwin intercepting a pass and returning it about 40 yards for the touchdown.

Chase Freeman’s extra point, his fifth, gave Callaway a 47-0 lead at the close of the quarter.

Douglass managed a touchdown against Callaway’s reserves in the second quarter, and it was a 47-8 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Callaway got a 3-yard touchdown run from backup quarterback Dra Martin, and Hunter Milliman made the extra point.

Douglass scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to cap the scoring.
