With the start of region play a little more than a week ago, the rested Callaway Cavaliers will travel to Hamilton on Friday to take on the Harris County Tigers.
The Cavaliers (1-1) have played two games this season, and they’ve also had two off weeks since their first game was on Aug. 25, a week before most teams played.
Callaway is hoping to head into next week’s Region 4-AAA game against Jackson-Atlanta.
“All these teams, from Shaw in the scrimmage game, to Heard County, to Troup, to Harris, hopefully all that will help us prepare for the region,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “Ultimately, that’s what we tell the kids is we want to get ready for the region, and this game is the next step.”
Harris County has an unflattering 0-3 record, but Wiggins said they have the look of a team a lot better than that.
Since compiling more than 400 yards in a season-opening 35-23 loss to Houston County, Harris County has lost to LaGrange 37-13 and Veterans 34-13.
Wiggins said no one is taking the Tigers lightly, though.
“They’re a (Class AAAAA school), and coach (Tommy) Parks does a great job with the kids,” Wiggins said. “That’s going to be a tough ballgame for us down in Hamilton.”
Callaway hasn’t played since it beat Troup 28-7 on Sept. 7, two weeks after a season-opening 43-37 loss to Heard County.
Wiggins said both off weeks were welcome.
“We knew Heard County would be a physical game. Before we played Troup it was good for us (to have a week off),” Wiggins said. “And after the Troup game we were bruised up. It was a physical game.”
Wiggins said it was a “good off week” and that the team enjoyed the chance to shake up the routine a little bit.
On Thursday, with many of the team’s 60-plus players participating in a junior-varsity game, the Cavaliers did some different things.
“We had a great practice that day, and we changed up some drills,” Wiggin said. “We had some competitions going on.
“We had challenges between our offensive and defensive linemen to see who could field the most punts. The ones that won got Gatorades at the end. We just had little things going like that."
This week, it was back to normal, although Monday’s practice was cut short by rain.
Because it was so late in the day, Wiggins decided to end practice rather than go in the gym.
Tuesday’s practice was held under cloudy skies, but the rain held off.
“Hopefully we can get our normal practice in Wednesday and Thursday, and then we’ll go play Harris County Friday night,” Wiggins said.
Callaway and Harris County have never played in a varsity game, and Wiggins said everyone is looking forward to it.
“It’s going to be a great atmosphere down in Hamilton,” Wiggins said. “They’re not far from us. It’ll be a great ballgame, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity”
