The Choral Society of West Georgia’s artistic director and conductor, Bettie Biggs, announced that this season’s rehearsals begin Thursday.

The members of the group are preparing for three different performances that should not be missed, she said.

In what has become a LaGrange tradition, the seventh annual Concert of Thanksgiving and Praise will be the first concert of the season. It is set for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church in downtown LaGrange. The concert is scheduled so that the colors of the church’s stained-glass windows will be caught by the setting sun to help set the stage for both the concert and the beginning of the holiday season, organizers said.

The Choral Society will then continue the season with their Valentine’s Night concert. “Skylark — A Musical Evening with Johnny Mercer” is a follow-up to last year’s sold out Valentine’s night concert. The LaGrange Civic Chorale again will team with the Fidelity Jazz Quartet for a Valentine’s night dinner, dance and concert at Highland Country Club on Feb. 14, 2013.

The concert will feature the music of Johnny Mercer, and Highland Country Club executive chef Cary Wolfe is creating a special Valentine’s menu. Ed Biggs, a member of the Choral Society, reported that last year’s tickets sold out three weeks in advance of the event, and during the performance the music was so popular that people had to dance on the carpet because the dance floor was completely filled.

The Choral Society’s final concert of the season will be “Luck Be A Lady Tonight,” featuring Bel Canto LaGrange, a women’s ensemble. Set for May 25, 2013, the concert is a tribute to the music of Broadway, especially arranged for women’s voices.

Comprised of the LaGrange Civic Chorale and Bel Canto LaGrange, rehearsals are held for this concert each Thursday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the chorus room at Troup High School for. Cindy Brown is the Chorale Society accompanist.

Repertoire includes a wide range of stylistic choral selections from Renaissance to contemporary. Membership is available to individuals of any age but an interview for voice placement is required.

For further information regarding membership, please contact Bettie Biggs at choralsociety@charter.net or 706-882-2734, or anyone interested may attend Thursday’s rehearsal.
