President Barack Obama may have scored a victory on healthcare Thursday, but he’s still not going to pay your utility bill.
The city of LaGrange is warning its customers not to give out their personal information to those claiming to be with a federal utility assistance program.
“It’s a scam,” said City Manager Tom Hall. “Apparently it’s a nationwide thing. We’ve gotten dozens and dozens of calls. Apparently, people are being told that the president is going to pay their utility bill.”
Representatives of the fake program contact people by phone, online and door to door. They ask for the customer’s Social Security number in exchange for a bank routing number that turns out to be fake. The customers are promised that a payment will be made and their utility account will be credited. That never happens.
Customers are told that Obama has approved special federal funding for utility assistance. There is none.
Hogansville and West Point representatives said they hadn’t received inquiries about the scam. A spokesman for Diverse Power said the company was aware of the scam, but it hadn’t been causing calls from customers.
Assistance with utilities is available through LaGrange Personal Aid, 706-882-9291 and CAFI – Community Action for Improvement – 706-884-2651.
