The Lafayette Christian School Cougars jumped into a new season in impressive fashion with a 36-6 victory over Philadelphia Christian Friday night in Rutledge.

Jeremy Fain got things started with a bang when he returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.

Philadelphia Christian responded with a touchdown of its own, but the Cougars took control from there and led 28-6 at the half.

“As the game went along, we settled down on offense, we settled down on offense, and we were able to build as the game went along,” Lafayette Christian head coach Nick Nehring said.

After Philadelphia Christian scored its lone touchdown, the Cougars drove and scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Matt Brown to go up 14-6.

Later in the half, Sam Cooper scored on an 18-yard run, and the two-point conversion put the Cougars on top 22-6.

Brown capped the first-half scoring with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Casey with seconds remaining.

In the second half, Brown came up with a one-handed interception, and he returned the ball to the Philadelphia 4-yard line.

Brown scored on a 4-yard run on the next play, and the two-point conversion capped the scoring.

Lafayette Christian will visit Twiggs Academy next week.
