An Alabama man allegedly admitted to accidentally burning a 20 foot by 20 foot patch of woods at Clark Access Park off New Franklin Road Wednesday. Troup County firefighters responded to the fire and called sheriff’s deputies for a “suspicious person” at the scene.

The man told deputies he had been drinking and “had drank too much,” according to a report. The man said he had started a fire because he was cold and repeated that he had too much to drink.

The man was charged with public intoxication. He wasn’t charged for the fire, which firefighters said was accidental.

Dog fight leads to neighbors’ fight

A 77-year-old West Point Road man said a neigbor threw him to the ground, causing him to cut his elbow, over the man’s dog jumping on the neighbor’s dogs. The neighbor said the elder man tried to punch him after he went to speak to him about the dogs, and he threw him down in defense. EMS treated the elder man at the scene. No one was charged.

Teens try to steal candy

Two juveniles were charged and another sought for shoplifting charges after the three allegedly tried to steal $150 in candy from Dollar General at 200 Colquitt St.

A store manager said the girls had filled up three bags with candy and then tried to push the cart full of confections out of the store without paying. When an employee confronted them, they fled.

The two juveniles identified in the shoplifting were cited and released to their parents.

Burglaries, thefts

•A resident of the 100 block of Wynnwood Drive said someone took his pit bull dog valued at $300; Playstation 3 valued at $250; and 40 Polo brand shirts, three Polo jackets and a pair of Ralph Lauren brand shoes valued at at a total $3,500 from his apartment.

•A thief took a keyboard and stand for an electronic gate opener valueda t $400 in the 1000 block of Smokey Road.

•A burglar entered a home in the 600 block of Waldrop Road by cutting the screen from a porch window and took $700 in items.

•A woman reported that someone stole a $300 cell phone from her son’s gym locker at Callaway High School.

•Someone took a vehicle of undisclosed make and model from the 100 block of Mallory Drive.

•An Alabama man said someone threw a brick through the window of his 2012 Chevrolet Sonic while it was parked in the 100 block of Alford Street and stole loose change.

•Someone stole several tools of undetermined value from a shed in the 400 block of Harwell Avenue.

Fake bill

A clerk at QV on new Franklin Road reported that a customer gave a fake $20 bill while paying for items. The customer said he got the fake bill from an ATM at a Grantville convenience store. An officer said the customer, who paid for the items with real money after finding out about the fake bill, didn’t knowingly use the fake money and he was not charged.
