It was good timing for the LaGrange High baseball team.

The Grangers returned from a summer baseball trip to Fort Walton on Saturday just as the weather took a turn for the worse because of Tropical Storm Debby.

“There was no bad weather over there,” LaGrange High baseball coach Todd Herrington said. “It wasn’t too hot. It was hot, but not unbearable hot.”

And most importantly, the three-day tournament was held under sunny skies, something that changed in a hurry as the storm approached.

LaGrange entered two teams in the tournament, which served as the end to the summer season for the program.

One of the teams went 1-3, and the other one went 2-2.

“We were a split squad playing against full squads, and we may have been overmatched in a couple of them,” Herrington said. “But they competed hard, and I thought it was a good trip.”

Herrington said the trip is always a highlight of the year for the players and their families.

“Most of them stay down there for an extra few days to extend their vacation,” Herrington said. “It’s kind of a reward for them for working hard. They look forward to that trip at the end of the summer. And it went well.”

The tournament wrapped up the summer season for the Grangers, who are coming off a terrific season that included a trip to the state quarterfinals.

“We’ll probably do some different things next summer,” Herrington said. “This summer, we played a lot locally, a lot of doubleheaders. Next summer I’ll try to get us into some more tournaments, maybe at some of the colleges.”
