The Troup County School System will hold two hearings Monday on its proposed millage rate for the fiscal 2013 year.

The Board of Education is not changing its millage rate, but because property tax values have risen and the board is not rolling back the rate, it is required by the state to hold hearings. The property value increase is 1.42 percent over the rollback millage rate. The current millage rate is 18.85.

The hearings are set for 10 a.m. at Hogansville Elementary School, 611 E. Main St., and 6 p.m. at West Point Elementary School, 1701 E. 12th St.

How can the property values be up 1.42% when in 2007-08 the real estate values nationwide tanked anywhere from 15-41% (16.5% locally), and the property values did not decrease any on property evaluations in Troup Co. (check your tax bills) ????????? Maybe the people in Trap Co. didn't get the news, or maybe this is America's Greatest Little County !!! I thought the NEW tax software would get us on the right track, or maybe it's just the people doing the valuations for the appraisers office is being told what to put as a Fair Market Value.
