As they’ve done since Day 1, the Hurricanes came out and took care of business.

Taking on the Raiders in the Troup County Parks and Recreation Commission 11-12-year-old championship game Tuesday night at Callaway Stadium, the Hurricanes scored on their second play from scrimmage, and they went on to capture a 20-0 victory.

The win capped a perfect season for the Hurricanes, and it was also the team’s third consecutive championship.

“We had a good season,” said Kinney Clark, the Hurricanes’ head coach the past three years. “We only got scored on twice. It’s been fun.”

It didn’t take the Hurricanes long to take control of the game.

On the second play from scrimmage, Deronta Delaney took a handoff and raced 56 yards for a touchdown, and the extra point gave the Hurricanes an 8-0 lead just 30 seconds into the game.

Clark said that play “set the tone. It was great.”

From there, it was a defensive tussle the rest of the first half, and the Hurricanes took an 8-0 lead at the break.

The Hurricanes struck for another big play in the third quarter.

The Hurricanes were backed up deep in their own territory following a Raiders’ punt, but Tavion Harton came through with a 13-yard run to give his team some breathing room.

Harton then ripped off a 74-yard touchdown run, and the Hurricanes were up 14-0 with 1:54 left in the third quarter.

It remained a 14-0 game until Jeffery Bray picked off a pass and returned it 70 yards for the touchdown to cap the scoring with 2:34 left in the game.

Clark said he appreciated the effort of the recreation commission during the season, and he also thanked his assistant coaches for their contributions.

“The coaches, without them, I couldn’t have done it,” Clark said. “And they’re just a good group of kids. They’re well-mannered. They deserve all the praise.”
