Swain, a senior football player at Troup High, had numerous options when it came to choosing a collegiate home, and when signing day arrived, he decided the University of Indiana was the place for him.
On Wednesday morning during the Troup signing-day ceremony in the media center, Swain pulled out a ski cap with the Indiana logo on it, making his intentions clear.
Swain then made it official by signing his letter of intent, with friends, teammates, coaches and family members looking on.
Swain said he reached his decision at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday, just hours before the signing-day ceremony.
“From the jump, they never slowed down,” Swain said of the interest shown by Indiana. “They were always behind me 100 percent, They were always there.”
Swain said having Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson make a trip down to Troup County had a lot to do with his decision.
“It’s not too often you get the head coach coming and sitting in your living room,” Swain said.
Although Swain played both ways last season, he was signed by Indiana as a defensive lineman.
Swain, who is listed at 6-foot-5, 305 pounds, had 64 tackles, five sacks 33 quarterback pressures, two fumble recoveries and an interception as a senior.
Troup head coach Lynn Kendall said he wasn’t sure what Swain was going to do until Wednesday morning.
“He kept his cards tight to the vest,” Kendall said. “We’re real happy. I know Indiana was real glad to hear that.”
Swain said he mostly enjoyed the recruiting process, although as it went along things got a lot more intense as decision day approached.
“When it first starts, it’s fun, but when you get to the end, it’s crunch time. It’s very serious,” Swain said. “You just have to go with your heart.”
And when he arrives in Bloomington, Swain said “I’ll just take what I learned down here in Troup County and show them what the south has to offer. I’m ready to get it started.”
