Sixty local businesses, companies and staffing companies had representatives available to greet potential employees at yesterday’s Career and Veterans Expo that was held at the Callaway Center on the West Georgia Technical College campus.
Attendees had the opportunity to meet with representatives from companies who were looking to hire qualified individuals. Assistance was also available for individuals who needed help in writing their resumes or filling out job applications.
Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Mark Butler thought the expo was going well and said that the expo was the result of a joint effort of his department working along with local colleges and agencies.
“It’s really a good turnout, we had a lot of people coming in to apply for jobs. We actually did a little informal poll and there are over 1,000 jobs represented today with these employers. I’ve talked with several of the employers and they hired some people right on the spot today,” said Butler.
The center was organized into different areas with the tables for the different employers set up in the main ballroom. In the lobby there were round tables set up where prospective employees had ample room to fill out applications for the various jobs. Volunteers, from Career Connect, were stationed throughout the center to help with any problem or questions that might come up.
There was a great variety of businesses that were represented at the expo and the jobs that they were offering covered a large spectrum of qualifications. Callaway Gardens, Community & Southern Bank, Grantham University, Home Depot, Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, LaGrange College, PetsSmart Distribution Center and Tucker Communications are just a sampling of the organizations that were represented at the Callaway Center.
Lucinda Person, from Kimberly Clark, greeted people as they entered the center giving them a registration form and an encouraging smile. She met individuals who were looking for a job who were out of work but also people who were looking to make the move to a better job.
Tatondra Moton, the HR specialist for Waffle House was looking to find applicants to fill 40-50 positions at local area restaurants. “Responses have been very good, we have gotten a lot of great candidates. We are up-staffing for the holidays, our challenges are that we are open 24 hours and on the holidays,” Moton said.
Rosalind, from Kia’s HR department, said that the application portal on the Kia website was going to open soon for maintenance workers. The company is looking for people to become members for both the general and die maintenance teams. She said that KIA believes in teamwork starting with management and continuing with all of their departments.
Tina King, from Allegiance Staffing, explained that her company hires individuals to fill full time positions in manufacturing plants in Franklin, LaGrange and West Point.
“I enjoy my job. Everyday I get to put 10 to 15 people to work. Right now we have 90 quality control technician positions available in West Point,” King said.
She was also impressed with the number of applicants that she had met with throughout the course of the day.
