LaGrange City Council will be making more minor changes to its ordinance to allow businesses to sell alcohol on Sunday.

Council voted in March to allow package and by the drink sales within the city limit, and changed its ordinance soon after to allow sales within certain hours.

But the ordinance inadvertently left out pool halls – there are two licensed pool halls in LaGrange – establishments that allow brown-bagging and catered events.

“Ordinances evolve over time,” said LaGrange City Manager Tom Hall, and the addition of sales on Sunday requires some more evolution on the city’s rule books.

“Pool halls are the equivalent of a bar or restaurant,” he said.

The city already had voted last year to allow caterers to get a license to sell alcohol at remote locations away from their main business, like event halls. But the new Sunday sales hours left caterers out, too.

The city still is looking at making changes to establishments that allow “brown-bagging,” people bringing in their own alcohol instead of buying it on-site. Hall said changes to that ordinance, which will look at the responsibilities of the owners of brown-bag establishments, will be coming in two weeks.

The changes proposed Tuesday only look at hours of operation, he said, and will be finalized at a later council meeting.

Council did decide Tuesday to ban truck through-traffic on Railroad Street, adjacent to Barnard Avenue.

Hall said the property owner at Railroad and Barnard had been a frequent victim of trucks making a sharp turn and taking out her fence, along with a fire hydrant and electric pole.

Trucks can use nearby Hill or Greenville streets as an alternate.
