For the second time in three years, the LaGrange Lady Grangers are playing for a region championship.

In 2011, they finished off a Region 6-AAA championship with a 58-46 victory over Carrollton.

Today, LaGrange (21-6) will try to add another region title to its resume when it takes on Fayette County in the Region 5-AAAA championship game.

Tip off is set for 6 p.m. at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone.

The Lady Grangers, the number four seed, earned their title shot with a 48-40 victory over top-seeded Sandy Creek on Thursday.

“That was a big win for us. It gave us a lot of confidence,” LaGrange head coach Jan Jones said.

It was a big win because Sandy Creek beat LaGrange twice in the regular season, including a 56-35 victory on Feb. 2.

Thursday’s game was close through three periods, but LaGrange pulled away in the final quarter to beat Sandy Creek on its home floor.

In their first-round victory over Carrollton, and the win over Sandy Creek, the Lady Grangers showed a lot of poise late and were able to win two close games.

“The biggest thing with Sandy Creek and Carrollton, there at the end, we’ve been able to keep our composure down the stretch,” Jones said. “During the fourth quarter we had the lead, and we’ve been able to keep the lead, and keep our composure.

“That’s the big thing for us. We’ve kind of matured a little bit in that area.”

Today, LaGrange and second-seeded Fayette County will be playing for the third time.

LaGrange lost to Fayette County 55-45 on Jan. 12 before winning the rematch 49-44 on Feb. 1.

Whatever happens today, Jones feels her team is playing well heading into the state tournament next week.

“I think we’re just now starting to peak, which is good,” Jones said. “I think in the past, we’ve peaked way too soon. I think for us, we’re just now starting to peak. They’re excited, and we’re playing together.”
